A great novel marked by a few unfortunately clunky moments. Set in working-class Minneapolis, it's the story of a Native American family who moved to the city for the promise of jobs in the 1960s, and the two sons who took jobs in the construction industry, literally building the cities on top of the land that should have belonged to them. Out on parole after serving a fifteen-year murder sentence, one of the sons, Simon, struggles with reentering the workforce with a prison record. It's a really original, well written, haunting novel. It also contains a totally epic scene of man-on-goose mortal combat.
