Voluptuous Panic: The Erotic World of Weimar Berlin
by Mel Gordon
Brian you brought up a lot of subjects here and all are interesting. First of all I think Chruchill was not only an iconic dresser but a good one as well. Very old school and almost has a PG Wodehouse quality.
John Kennedy was a good dresser and quite a stylist. His brother Robert strikes me more 'common' dresser then anything else. I think Obama is a good dresser. He looks good in suits - and I presuming he doesn't buy these clothes off the rack. I think he has a tailor.
Castro is an elegant looking man as well. But in general Fascism always had a thing about clothes. Whatever it's the uniform look of Maoism, or the dandy fetish aspect of Nazism. And Italian Fascists were good looking as well. But then again I think each look is about the culture they want to convey or project. Again, its the 'vision' thing.
Condaleezza Rice is fucking hot, and doesn't appear to care one whit who knows it. I think this proves Brian's point (maybe), and allows me to voice an unpopular opinion I've held for the past several years:
CONDI is smooooooookin' HOTTT. She's also one of the most terrible persons who ever lived, but at this point in history, who really cares? She's got great boots! And gorgeous, snooty black girl freckles, which are worth their weight in gold and Iraqi children....
Fascist = fashion.
Never forget it!
HOTTT!!!!
love this bri..
you continue to be my favorite reviewer on this whole damn site.
jessica--condi's teeth ruin it all for me.
It's a shame Rice has no 'vision' talent that goes beyond her clothing. I wonder if she has a portrait of Dorian Gray" type of painting in her closet somewhere?
uh-oh... the most humorless man in the universe is BACK!
it seems as if he would actually rather have people laugh at him than with him.
i'm in.
Brian, why do you always pick on me? You know my weakness and then you attack! I told a joke once, but the world cried instead!
tosh. you and david are a great comedy team. you're the charming and slightly goofy dandy... and david's the (somewhat psychotic) straight man. genius, my good man, genius!
What's interesting about the subject matter is how these things get so preverted. And I am talking about the clothing. For instance do we know who designed Nazi outfits? It seemed Hugo Boss designed the SS outfits as well as clothing for the Hitler Youth. So did he or the company needed approval from Hitler himself?
Also it's interesting that the Japanese Nationalist (and great writer) Yukio Mishima had his private army dressed in an uniform designed and made in Paris, France.

if I wasn’t a lazy bastard, I’d put together a photography book called Fascist Fashion. Yeah, that’s right. americans are great at a certain form of propoganda but the real 20th century badasses, the communists and fascists and tyrants and totalitarians and terrorists (in the case of the latter, their 21st counterparts really need to get their shit together. unruly beards and dirty robes and timex watches? Suicide Chic? uh… no), understand the aesthetics and sexuality of power and violence. (americans seem not to understand the sexuality of anything. It just seems to seep to the surface of our pop culture in a variety of disturbing ways)
consider Stalin. in america he’d be some short, scarred, ugly guy. over there? a crisp boxy suit, stylish hat, trimmed mustache, twinkle in his eye, throw on the samovar, olga on one knee, marfa on the other, weekend at the dacha, sheee-it comrade! or Castro: beard, army fatigues, cute little cap, and that cigar (whic...more

You mean you didn't like Janet Reno's primary blue dresses and gold seashell brooches? Then there was Laura Bush--sort of Oleg Cassini-meets-Oy Vey Cassini. I didn't know if she married the Most Powerful Man in the World or was waiting for a bus trip to the Mall of America. (Quit staring at me, Laura. Put down the amphetamines.)
You are so right, Brian. Fascism/totalitarianism wrote the book on oppressive showmanship. Riefenstahl, despite possible other moral failings, was likely done in by the showbiz of Nazism. The lock-step, the tailored suits, the strong graphic flags and kitsch emblems.
(I also want to give a shout-out to the black chador. As a stricture, it's reprehensible; but as a costume, it's ominously chic. Sort of like the faceless walker from Maya Deren's "Meshes of the Afternoon.")
