This is a beautifully written book with so many unforgettable characters. Our entire book club liked it. You have to be prepared for a lot of sadness when reading it, though. There is not much joy to be found in it at all, but I cared about the characters so much that I still had to keep reading despite the fact that it went to some very sad, dark places. Just like real life, books can't always be wrapped up with a pretty bow at the end. I think it's important to read books that take us to a time period that we should all know about and remember.
