really liked it
bookshelves: finished, eunuch
Read in January, 2012 , read count: 1

I picked this up because the main character is a woman dressed as a eunuch in thirteenth-century Constantinople! Was not disappointed in that regard. I described Anna's eunuch persona Anastasius in an article posted to Disruptive Dissertation. Overall this is a detailed historical world and an elaborately entertaining story.

I do, however, agree with some of the reviewers that there wasn't really any suspense here. Certain characters had some psychological depth and complexity; others did not. If you are interested in the historical time period including the church politics, or in the eunuch, you should definitely read it. If you are selecting a story based on plot and character development alone, I don't know that I'd recommend this one.
