There's a bit too much maybe in Greenblatt's Will in the World for my tastes: Shakespeare might have stayed here, where he might have met so-and-so, which might have made him believe such-and-such. The New Historicism narration which so fascinated me in the exquisitely written The Swerve just doesn't work for me in what's purportedly a biography, particularly when I reach the end and realize I have difficulty remembering what was fact and what was sheer speculation. Greenblatt's a master at keeping your interest, and Shakespeare's not exactly a dull guy, but all the what if?s wear thin.
