Tessa Masterson Will Go To Prom is not your typical high school romance, though it is about high school and there is a bit of romance. The two main characters--narrated alternately in a he-said/she-said format (written by Brendan Halpin and Emily Franklin, respectively)--are not the quintessential star-crossed couple. Instead, they are star-crossed friends.
Lucas and Tessa have been besties since grade school but new circumstances are challenging their relationship. Lucas decides to come clean about his true feelings for Tessa in a grand, public gesture at the same time Tessa determines to come clean with a life-altering truth about herself. When their conflicting needs collide, the result goes beyond them to involve their families, their school, their whole town, and ultimately, the wider world. How they each deal with their personal situations and the larger questions that are raised will help them figure out how to finally deal with each other again.
This is a well-written story that presents seminal issues without wallowing in them. It's about personal conviction, and the impact of friends and family on both our private courage and its public expression. 3.5 stars
