While Room is quite creative, and the characters of Jack and his Ma are pretty well drawn out, it is horrific. The story of a kidnapped, captive young woman, her son (the result of rape, many many years of repeated rape) and the single room they lived in for all of Jacks' life (five of his years plus two before he came along) is so very disturbing. Post daring escape, in which most stories end, Donoghue continues to tell the story of how hard it is to adjust to a world that you thought was make-believe. Which is understandable, how would you react to finding out what you thought was the entire world was false and then trying to adjust, and trying to interact with other humans when you just found out they actually exist? It's pretty awful, and for a five year old, extremely confusing. Just thinking about this novel gives me the willies.
