I've read and deeply admired three titles by John Fowles: The French Lieutenant's Woman, The Magus, and The Ebony Tower. The French Lieutenant's Woman is also one of those very rare cases where the movie rivals the book in quality.
This one is set in the era of Thomas Hardy, and the language used is such that I found it easy to imagine someone like Hardy reading it and understanding it perfectly. The very subtle blending of that bygone time with the modern time in which it was written was one of the most interesting aspects of the story, which again the film handled beautifully.
