really liked it
bookshelves: fantasy, science-fiction

Re-read. I liked the start of this series from Modesitt (like Recluce, SF disguised as fantasy) somewhat better than the follow-ups (esp. the 2nd trilogy that's really a prequel). An interesting world, a competent-if-imperfect hero, and a nice mix of action and introspection. The world's backstory is developed more in the later books, but is given a good start here. A little too much military action for my personal preference (if not as much as the sequels), but it's not handled that badly and much of it is planning and buildup.

Re-read, 8/14
