Read from February 16 to 19, 2012

It’s silly and irreverent and satirical and very Adam Rex, but it’s also a bit of a letdown. Set in a New Jersey town, the headquarters of a multinational cereal company that makes sugary breakfast cereals, the plot involves a normal kid (Scott) and genius twins with a weird home life (Erno and Emily) who find out that Goodco has been kidnapping magical creatures and using their magic in the cereal. One weird and whimsical thing happens after another, and there are some wonderful bits – the discovery that there are unicats, the revelation about Scott’s full name – but it starts to get somewhat disjointed towards the end, and it’s just not as clever or as emotionally resonant as Smekday. Alex and Tim agreed with me.
