This is the story of a remote Romanian Jewish village that decides to create a new world upon hearing of the destruction caused in a nearby village by a man "with a square mustache who wants to reinvent the world". For years, they are able to live peacefully in a new world, but it's not enough to escape the war or avoid the violence.

Ausubel's prose is absolutely beautiful. It has a dreamlike quality that just casts a spell on the reader; at the same time, the subject matter makes it haunting. It's a stunning book and I found myself choking up at times. Highly recommend it.
