Oh my! The details of the this story captivated me. I was a bit shocked at the lack of moral judgement that many of these people had back then, but it was a different time. I loved this heart wrenching story because some of the decisions that were made in this book are mind boggling and unsettling. The author really did a lot of leg work to make this story as true as it could get, and I feel she did a wonderful job.

The area where this event happened shocked me, since at one time I lived right outside of Salisbury, NC. I have heard the song since childhood, and when my step-mother recommended this book I was quite intrigued. It is now etched in my mind, and if I hear the song again, I will have a better understanding of the truth of this true story.
