I read this a looooong time ago. I'm pretty sure it was written by an angry parent who is cheesed off by the fact that their student is always playing video games and not reading - why else design a world where books are as forgotten as last season's fashion faux pas, and people literally play video games until they die? This reminds me a lot of the "Uglies" series in terms of the silly character names, gritty subject matter, and look-I'm-trying-so-desperately-hard-to-be-hip-ness. However, I felt that the author made his point very well, and relatively subtly, without any flipflopping or ambiguity. I'm too old for this now, but it's definitely great for kids in the middle grades.
