What a delight! I knew of Alice Hoffman's existence from my days working in a bookstore in the early 1990s, but I had never read her work until now. Reading Hoffman's "Practical Magic" was similar to my first reading of Robertson Davies's writing—a deeply felt connection with its author. Hoffman has a new fan.

A novel of magic realism, "Practical Magic" is the story of sisters—old, middle aged and young—who find that the bonds of blood, and love, are sustenance during challenging times.

Hoffman's work is simply enchanting. A gifted writer who rides the arc of a narrative like a surfer to the waves. Completely and utterly enjoyable.
