It took a few chapters for me to really sink into this book, but Im glad I stayed with it. At first the flow of language was a bit distracting, but it either smoothed out as the novel progressed, or I simply got used to it. Either way, I was committed.
I liked the way it played between case-study (the story of Lazarus and his sister - both told from afar), and the narrator's journey (told from the first person). The parallels are many, most obviously the immigrant journey. Immigrant stories are many, but I appreciated the modern feel of this one especially in comparison to Lazarus's historical one.
The stories were simultaneously moving, confounding, and appalling. The perspective was touching. The ending will surprise you. Or maybe not. Read it and find out.
My boyfriend is Bosnian and Im also personally interested in his perspective about the culture and immigrating to America in relation to Hemon's.
