really liked it
bookshelves: fantasy
Read from February 08 to 21, 2012

** spoiler alert ** I really liked this book a lot. Chela was a strong main character, more believable then many others I've seen. The other characters too were likewise individual and interesting, particularly the three main guys Seth, Faris and Galen. I liked the sorta dystopian world that was presented and the writing style was very visual and unique in some ways. The story itself too was interesting with lots of twists and turns. I also applaud the fact that it did not end in a typically happy romantic way - this added more depth and realism to the story as the events were not just glossed over as could so easily have been done. Though I'm sure we have certainly not seen the last of Faris, I thought that him choosing to leave made him out to be a better character as by doing so he was truly looking out for Chela's interests then putting her in further danger by staying. Overall I think the writing style and the story flowed quite well and I never found myself getting bored even at times when there was little action going on. The only reasons that this didn't get five stars are relatively minor issues which bugged me. Sometimes I felt that not enough information was given as to certain elements of the world which stopped me understanding it properly. For example, I never was quite sure what the S.O.P.A's were and a few things were taken for granted that the reader would know what they were which I didn't. Also, I did find myself getting a bit confused with some of the side characters - there were quite a few and I often got muddled as to which was which and who's side they were on. A re-read though of the book would probably help me with this.
I liked the idea of presenting both sides of the opposing factions too as through seeing so much of Seth, it helped develop the idea that perhaps the Tainted are not as evil as they are made out to be and perhaps Chela may even find herself sympathising more with them in the future.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and will most likely read the sequel.
