For a short book, Na tells a big story. Young Ju's family leaves Korea for a better life in America which she believes is like Heaven. But, her parents struggle to adjust, her father becoming an abusive alcoholic. As Young Ju negotiates adolescence, she struggles with her family's traditional Korean expectations and the American pressures of school and getting into college. The book does a beautiful job of showing how Young Ju comes into her own spirit as a confident young woman.

Winner of the 2002 Printz Award.
