An intriguing book by British author David Almond who pulls heavily from his childhood growing up in a mining community in rural England. Kit returns with his family to his parents home town and odd things begin to happen. When he befriends an odd trouble maker, things start to spin out of control. Only Kit's passion for story telling and writing can save them from the fantastical history of the old coal town and abandoned mines. As always, depending on what you believe will decide if this is the story of a child's overactive imagination or a supernatural thriller.

Winner of the 2001 Printz award.
