While I consider myself an Edmund White superfan, I was less than amazed with this book. I was fortunate enough to read a Q&A which helped answer some of my questions, and that helped. Mainly I was confused why the book was written, it seems to build to something that never happens. While this is realistic, it left me a little bored.

At first I found the shift in POV really hard to handle. In fact when it switched from 3rd person to 1st person, I put the book down for about a week. It just made it so hard to keep reading the story. Aside from the slight anti-climax in plot, and shifting POV, Edmund White is still an incredible word smith. His phrases, dialogue, and imagery is something to savor and enjoy.

I wouldn't suggest this as the best of his work, but it is a nice addition to the collection.

R. Noir If you could let us know where you found that Q&A I'd be very grateful! I just finished the book last night (my first reading of White) and though I am excited to read more by him, I'm a little wary of what I may find. Like you, I agree that the resolution was realistic (if a bit abrupt), but if not for White's exquisite description and experience, the book could be mistaken as entirely clichéd in plot. Sure, surprisingly few writers have explored this theme in fiction, but somehow, due to inevitable first-hand experiences of gay men, and sloppy coverage in various films, the unrequited love plot was quite familiar--almost inappropriately so, if that makes sense.

A good, challenging read, nonetheless, but I hope to find even better in his body of works
