Lena is a fifteen year old girl who loves the ocean and loves being outside. Her father, a once famous surfer, does not want to teach her how to surf and forbids her from learning from others. Lena lives with her father, stepmother and little brother who all love her dearly. Lena is however sad because her mother died when she was just three. Lena starts to sleepwalk down to the beach and begins to see reflections in the water of a face. After she turns sixteen, she decides that even though her father does not want her to, she is going to learn to surf anyway. While surfing, she falls in the water and is rescued by a woman who places a key in her hand. The key unlocks a box with the mermaid’s mirror inside. After confronting her father about the mirror, he finally admits that her mother didn’t die, but was actually a mermaid who was forced to return to the sea. With the mermaid’s mirror, Lena goes to the beach to be united with her mother. This begins her stay in the mermaid’s village in the ocean. The longer she stays, the harder it becomes to remember her loving family on land. Lena must make decisions about herself, her family, and who she is.

I highly recommend this book. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and then you want one thing to happen and then you change your mind and then you go back. It is a great lesson in finding oneself and done in an appropriate way! This book will NOT stay on the shelves in my libraries! Forget about the vampires – the mermaids rule!
