As I read through Blue Ocean Strategy, two companies kept coming to mind: Nintendo and Apple. Both businesses have demonstrated a recurring knack for introducing their unique products to non-customers by bucking industry trends.

Nintendo did it with the DS and Wii; Apple did it with the iPod & iTunes (complete music experience), iPhone (abandoning tactile buttons in favour of a touchscreen) and the iPad (a tablet computer that appeals to everyone, not just geeks).

Yes, there's plenty of criticism out there for BOS, but overall the theories put forth in this book are useful and relevant to many industries.
