** spoiler alert ** I received this book free as part of the First Reads program. Finishing it was PAINFUL. I don't know if the problem was that the subject matter was too dark for me (although I can handle a Stephen King novel) or if it was just not a good book. Brief synopsis: 4 British men who were buddies in college travel to Sweden to hike a forest trail. Two of them are out of shape and are spent on the first day, so they decided to take a shortcut through a forest that happens to be inhabited by a maneating jackal-beast and they try to get out of the forest while it slowly picks them off. That's the first 200 pages or so. The second 200 pages is the remaining friend trying to survive being captured by members of a Norwegian satanic heavy metal band who want to sacrifice him to said jackal beast.

This book was about 200 pages too long. The first half of the action was set in a rainy, slimy forest so wet and bleak I wanted to move to the Sahara and never look back. The second half of the book was so bloody and disgusting that I almost couldn't stand it. I actually got mad and wanted to scream at the book "End already!" I mean, how many times can a person have his nose broken or be cut, or have his head wound re-opened, and still survive? How many times can you describe someone blanching or turning pale? Not my kind of book...
