This is a wonderfully dark fantasy novel, the first in a trilogy. The plot is unpredictable, which goes far in drawing me into a story. The character development is great, and the two main characters change over the course of the story--a sine qua non for a good novel.

One of the main features in the book is the elaborate system of magic. In the story, magic is a key component, and is explained in detail as the heroine, Vin, learns how to use her special gifts. The magic system is so engrossing, as much as a major character.

The book is not "great literature"--not like fantasy novels by Gene Wolfe--but it is vastly entertaining. I simply did not want to put the book down, until the end.

Betsy Interesting. I started this several years ago and couldn't get interested in it. Maybe I'll have to try it again.
