Arnold Lobel's Frog and Toad are Friends consists of five classic short stories revolving best friends Frog and Toad. Some of the story plots include Toad's reluctance to embrace the Spring after a winter's hibernation, a lost button, and telling a story to a sick friend.

These simple but clever stories are fun and whimsical--somewhat in the vein of Grahame's The Wind in the Willows (though for a younger audience). They have underlying lessons but are never heavy-handed.

Though the illustrations taking up only perhaps a forth of the total work, these softly-colored, appealing cartoons are used very effectively in reinforcing the storytelling.

With its simply-constructed sentences and whimsical characterization, Frog and Toad are Friends makes learning to read a pleasure!
