** spoiler alert ** I read the entire series, at first I was a bit lost. The author just kind of tore into the story, without much explanation. As the books went on, I began to really love and feel for these people. I think someone trying the book should keep going and give it a chance. I'm glad I did.

The one character I did not care for was lazy Chauncy. In the end, he started to possibly "get" his mother. It occurred to me that he may be like his hermit father Portius was (and the mystery backstory) before Sayward came into his life. In fact, Chauncy's "Sayward" may have been the half sister that pushed him along and made him dare, but tragically the relationship had to end. Portius was lucky, Chauncy was not.

Anyway, just my thoughts, I'm sure others have different theories. Good book. I really enjoyed it.
