Out of Sheer Rage is Geoff Dyer's book about struggling to write a book about D.H. Lawrence. (How meta). The first and last third of the book deal with Dyer's pilgrimages to sites where Lawrence lived or traveled. These sections are worthy of five stars. One of the book blurbs is by Woody Allen, and he claims Out of Sheer Rage is the funniest book he's ever read. I rarely find books that are supposed to be funny, funny. Yet these sections were hilarious, engaging, and fascinating meditations on traveling and writing. The middle third seemed to concern itself more with the actual Lawrence study, and, while still interesting, it was far less so. I couldn't help myself waiting for Dyer to get back on the road. If you are interested in Lawrence, writing, or travel, this will be a good read.
