Every author has the right to produce the book he or she has inside. It doesn't have to meet reader expectations or desires. What disappoints one reader will delight another. The only responsibility a writer has is to the work.

Other Terry Pratchett fans have told me that SNUFF is wonderful; they loved it.

I can't argue with that. All I can say is, if the rating is based on whether or not I, me, myself liked the book, the answer is no. I didn't.

Is Pratchett's signature sideways humor almost totally missing from this book, or am I so used to it, it doesn't strike me sideways anymore? Is he writing (perhaps understandably) darker these days?

I used to read Pratchett for escape. SNUFF is dark enough to be a news broadcast.

Mr. Pratchett doesn't owe me a vacation. I'm not claiming that he does. This book might be your cup of tea. It wasn't mine.

Sherry Chandler Good points, Marian. Pratchett can always write beautifully but this one lacks a certain bouyance.

Kieran my sentiment exactly. I really struggled to get into this book. I guess my expectations where so high as i literally read from start to finish every other Vimes book in prep for this release. Your always going to like some more than others and maybe i need to go back and read it again (and again) like i have with all the others but this one really wasn't what i was personally hoping for.

Bojan I too feel that his last two books are much darker and in serious tones, compared to his early work. It does however raise some interesting questions and parallels to the real world situations, as always. I still liked the book but I wouldn't give it more than 3 and a half stars.

Bojan, I think you're absolutely right. Ever since 9/11, his books have been going darker. A lot of things that used to be laughable just aren't anymore.

Iona, I couldn't agree more. The line seemed a little too thin is exactly what it was!
