This book disturbed me and I'm not easily disturbed and I'm still deciding if I want to post a review.

Petra (Safari Poet) Sorry to hear that. Can I ask what disturbed you about the story?

message 2: by Trish (new) - added it

Trish Doller *SPOILER ALERT*

I was really uncomfortable with the way Violet went ballistic over Lincoln not telling her the truth (to the point where she won't speak to him) and yet Phoenix can admittedly manipulate her emotions--and does without her permission--and she only gets mad him. So the message feels like "guy who teaches you to be strong and independent is bad for lying, but guy who emotionally rapes you is a-okay." I get that she eventually figures out that Lincoln IS the good guy, but it doesn't negate the fact that she permits Phoenix to treat her the way she does and keeps going back for more.

Also, I am SO not a prude when it comes to sex in YA. I like sex in YA, but that scene...it felt way too mature. And I was seriously uncomfortable with the idea of her asking him to take away her control. I know afterward she regrets it, but the fact that--despite having been nearly raped when she was younger--she'd ASK for that? For her first time? The near rape was mentioned and used as an explanation for her skittishness early in the book, but as soon as Phoenix comes on the scene, it's gone. His powers are a far too convenient--and, again, creepy--way to write all of that off.
