Transition is a novel I started off reading and not liking. I'm not 100% sold on Iain (M) Banks. Yes, he can be superb at his best. Yes, he has wheems of style dripping from the pages. However, I've never been a fan of (macho mechanical) sex 'n (unnecessarily graphic) violence. They rouse in me a sense of cold and distaste that will quickly make me put down any book. And Banks does like to lard his books with plenty of those. Didn't have much of a choice with this as I bought it in the airport en route for a holiday. Nothing else to read but Spanish newspapers.

It does transcend those things and ultimately, it has a heart. Now, I'm not a fan of lurrrve, either. But it snuck up and ambushed me. As the story unfolded, I began to CARE.

Trust me, I was surprised!

So read this book on the basis that it won't do what you expect of it.
