Widow's Web (Elemental Assassin, #7)

Widow’s Web is the seventh book in the Elemental Assassin series and it goes to prove that life begins at retirement. At least it does for our heroin Gin Blanco who has been ‘retired’ for six books now.
She has gone from being an emotionally numb ex street rat turned assassin with few friends and a dead family to a confident woman with friends, a lover and even a little sister who wasn’t dead after all and a flourishing barbecue restaurant. If only so many people didn’t want to kill her then it would be near perfect. That would only make her bored though and who wants to read about that?
Fortunately Widow’s Web is far from boring.
The problem with having people that you love is that you then have a lot to lose.
Salina Dubois is as beautiful and enchanting as any mermaid that has ever lured sailors to a watery death. She is also an ex of Owen, Gin’s lover, and she wants him back.
That is only the start of Gin’s troubles.
What I have always liked about Gin is how tough she is. She doesn’t get intimidated or let herself get drawn into stupid pissing contests with goons. Finally someone who doesn’t feel the need to prove herself to every bugger that crosses her path.
Sometimes I do feel a little taken aback by how easily Gin contemplates killing but her lack of posturing or cowering make me love her all the same and she is an assassin after all.
Owen seemed strange and out of character for much of this book though it was good to get to know more about his past.
The action scenes where well written but I could have done without so much of the cookery.
Previous books had an unfortunate tendency to recap and for descriptions that get boring but this is greatly improved in this book.
The Elemental Assassin books are dark and violent but there is also hope, courage and love.
I’m already looking forward to the next book Deadly Sting.
