Complicated. Intriguing. This is the kind of novel that gives you butterflies at the ending, but upon closer scrutiny, reveals layer after layer of nuanced meaning and import. It's hard to tell exactly what kind of novel this is - a bildungsroman, a social critique, a novel of manners, a cautionary tale? Its very complexity increases its appeal, and the subtlety and craft of its characters (if not as much the plot), provides ample proof of the genius of its author; it's a hard book not to love with abandon.
