5 stars

Every once in a while, I read a book that blows me away enough to deserve a 5-star rating. It stands out among the other books I read. It lingers in my thoughts even when I try so hard not to think about it. It makes me want to both cry and smile and scream in frustration. It makes me want to read it over and over and over again.

The Storyteller is that book.

How is it even possible to review a book like this? There surely can’t be any words to describe what I am feeling right now, but I will give it a go.

The last thing I expected when I picked up this book, was to be so affected by this story, but I was. I couldn’t get enough of the dark and haunting tale of Anna Leemann and Abel Tannatek, our complex storyteller. For a translated-to-English book, the writing in this story was absolutely beautiful. I’m not always a fan of intricate writing, or even slow-paced writing, but Antonia Michaelis combines the two styles in the most accessible of ways and manages to do so without estranging the reader. I was truly mesmerized by her words, by Abel’s words. For such a multifaceted and difficult character, Abel Tannatek easily engulfed me with his fairy-tale, much the same way he did to Anna.

Here is a snippet from his story:

'There was the place where all the shouted words fall into the water. They’re too weak to make it from shore to shore. I saw the words underwater, millions of them; they’re lying there on the bottom of the sea, a whole load of wrecked sentences, sentences that never reached their destination, questions from one side and answers from the other…'

Doesn’t sound like your type of thing? It doesn’t sound like my type of thing either. As admirable as writing like that is, as wonderfully skilled as writing like that is, I can so easily lose interest, become disengaged from the words, as has happened many times before with several other books. That was sort of what I expected would happen with The Storyteller. I almost thought I would be tempted to skim over Abel’s narration of his story so I could get back to the actual story, Antonia’s story. But I didn’t. I didn’t skim over a single word. I read each and every sentence of his fantastical fairy-tale, his eerily stunning fairy-tale that paralleled the murky reality the he and his sister Micha lived in. How could I not, when his words were so poignant and enthralling?

To say Abel is a remarkable character for creating such a remarkable tale that reflected and foreshadowed the truth, would be a lie. Or maybe it wouldn’t be a lie. What is your definition of remarkable? Because I thought Abel was remarkable, but then I changed my mind. But then I changed it back again. I thought he was an astonishing character from the moment he ran to his younger sister and twirled her around in the air, from the moment his words left his mouth as his entertained Micha with his stories. The love he has for Micha is so achingly perfect that, given their situation, the reader cannot help but support his character. But then, but then…we reach the end of Chapter 12. It all changed for me then. It hit me before I could even see what was coming. In a split second, wonderful Abel is no longer the storyteller; he is someone else entirely. And it devastated me. All I could think about was Anna, poor, poor Anna.

Let’s backtrack to a heart-warming scene between the two of them, because that was exactly what I did when I reached Chapter 13 and felt like I couldn’t, wouldn’t, read any more. The Abel here is the Abel I will remember from this book:

'He pulled her close and held her for a moment, so tight she could feel every single bone in his body. And somewhere between them, she felt his heart beating, fast and nervous. Hunted. He let go of her before the hug became a real hug, left her standing there, and fled from the tower.'

I did continue on, even though I was feeling a little depressed by the story at this point. Things weren’t going my way, not really. But Antonia Michaelis doesn’t disappoint. Even when I am close to not being able to take it anymore, she manages to compel me with her thrilling story line and riveting murder mysteries. Yes, there is a murder mystery to solve. More than one murder, in fact. I do love a plot that keeps me guessing, and the plot in this book did exactly that. When we finally reach the big revelation, I was rendered speechless; though a small part of me is insistent that it couldn’t have been any other way, but I wished, wished, wished it had been another way, any other way. If it had been, the book would not have had to end the way it did – an ending that destroyed me.

Looking back on it, however, I think everything that happened, including everything that made me sick to the core, enhanced the story. Each and every gritty detail made it apparent that Antonia’s story, unlike Abel’s, is no fairy-tale. The Storyteller is a spell-binding tale of love and violence and everything in between, one that is impossible to forget. In a way, I wish I could forget this book, because even while writing this review, a large part of me feels quite numb. But the other part of me, an even larger part, is thrilled to have discovered such a magnificent young-adult story and is determined to remember it for a long time.

Still not convinced? I’m not surprised; my review sounds pretty depressing. Stop by on my blog on Feb 13, 2012, where I will be kicking off The Storyteller Blog Tour and I’ll share the opening extract of the book with you.

Aa'Ishah This looks quite interesting. What do you think of it so far?

message 2: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam I've only read the first couple of chapters, but I'm really impressed so far! The writing is beautiful. :)

message 3: by Aa'Ishah (new) - added it

Aa'Ishah So far so good! It seems like the kind of story where the writing would need to be on another level to really make it work. Another potential book to add to my TBR pile. Thanks :)

message 4: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam This is actually a translation of a German book - I don't know how much of the writing has been lost in translation, but it's still really good. :D

message 5: by Aa'Ishah (new) - added it

Aa'Ishah Oh, really? It has quite a Grimm's Fairytales element to it as well, I think. It's definitely growing on me more. :)

Eunice This sounds really interesting, Sam. Looking forward to your review! :))

Claire Wow, Sam. 5 stars? You must have really liked this! :]

message 11: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam I can't even begin to explain it, Claire. I loved it, but it was such an emotional roller-coaster. It's not the happiest story ever...

Stephanie (Stepping out of the Page) Ooh, you've finished! I'm still not done, only about half way through, but I feel as though this could be a 5* for me too. Can't wait for your full review!

message 13: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam I felt almost certain it would be a 5-star review by the time I was halfway, too. But then things got...complicated. I thought about going for 4/4.5 overall after that (you'll see what I mean when you get to it!) but then the ending forced me to bring it up to 5 stars again. I can't wait to see what you make of it. :)

message 14: by Aa'Ishah (new) - added it

Aa'Ishah 5 stars? Wow. I look forward to reading the full review!

message 15: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam Thanks Aa'ishah. I'm trying to work out how to write it. :P

message 16: by Aa'Ishah (new) - added it

Aa'Ishah Good luck! :D Even your speechlessness tells a lot.

♥Rachel♥ I just clicked over and bought this. I hadn't heard of this until I saw you reading it but it sounds really good. The 5 stars sealed the deal. :) I'll be looking for your review.

message 18: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam YES! So glad you've bought a copy, Rachel. I was trying to work out ways to force you all to read it. ;) I can't wait for you to read it!

message 19: by Eunice (new) - added it

Eunice Ooh, 5 stars? That must have been really great. Can't wait to hear you thoughts, Sam! Adding this on my TBR pile! :))

message 20: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam You do that Eunice! I want everyone I know to read this book. :D I'm trying to write my review right now...but it's so hard!

message 21: by Eunice (new) - added it

Eunice Oh, I also find it hard to write reviews when the book's really great. Good luck! :))

message 22: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam Thanks Eunice. It's up now. I had to force myself to stop writing as I had so much more to say but I didn't want my review to get any longer. :D

message 23: by Eunice (last edited Feb 04, 2012 04:33am) (new) - added it

Eunice Oh, Sam. That really sounds depressing but you also make it sound very compelling. I suddenly remembered Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma. It was depressing too but really good. So yeah, I really hope to read this soon. Should I have to ready myself emotionally before I start this? Great review, btw. :))

message 24: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam Oh definitely. Not that it'll prepare you in any way, mind you. :D I think things really start to get a little twisted towards the second half, but I can't wait to see what you think, Eunice! I hope you can grab a copy soon. :)

message 25: by Eunice (new) - added it

Eunice Oh, right. Preparing doesn't work on me anyway. Haha! I keep on hoping somethings good is still going to happen when obviously there isn't. That's why I usually avoid books with devastating endings but wow, for some reasons there's a strong pull to read this book. I have to read this really sooooon. ^^

message 26: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam I don't want to say that the ending is devastating...but I guess it depends. I'm not making any sense, I know! I don't want to tell you what happens (well, actually, I kind of do!) but I can understand now why you're drawn to this. :)

message 27: by Eunice (new) - added it

Eunice Haha! You're actually making me more interested. I'll figure that out then once I've finally read this. :))

message 28: by Maja (new) - added it

Maja Hahaha, you saw right through me, didn't you?

message 33: by Mesa (new) - added it

message 34: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam Yay, Mesa! I can't wait for you to read it. And thanks! :)

~Tina~ You sold me! Great great review!

♥Rachel♥ Amazing and beautiful reviews Sam. But now I'm very, very nervous about this book!

message 37: by Jasprit (new) - added it

Jasprit Wonderful review Sam, I love it when you're surprised by a book that it blows you away. Especially when you're not expecting much going into it

message 38: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam Tina, Rachel, thanks! I hope you will both like this!

Jasprit, I love that feeling too. I had actually considered skipping this, but I'm so glad I didn't now. :)

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Wonderful review :). I've wavered on wanting to read this, but your review has convinced me to give it a try.

message 40: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam Great, Ace! It's just one of those books you have to try. I hope you can read it soon! :)

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

Me, too :D. I'm currently reading Scarlett Dedd, and I'm just not into it. At what point do you decide to set a book aside and move on?

message 42: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam The description makes it sound pretty interesting, but it's a shame you aren't liking it more. Believe it or not, I nearly always finish every book I start, unless it is completely terrible. Thankfully I haven't picked up any those lately. :)

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

It's not the story that I'm not into. The story is fun and really different. It's the formatting of the galley. There are illustrations (which I like), but sometimes the font will be curved in such a way as to look like the page of the novel has been bent, and it's really hard to read. It happens quite a bit, too.

message 44: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam Oh, that's frustrating! I hate it when galley's are badly formatted, especially if you starting noticing all the mistakes and it takes away from actually enjoying the book.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, I think that's just how the book is going to be. Like, for example, there's a scene where the character is vomiting, and there are splashes on the page like someone dropped water on the ink and it started to run. I think it was supposed to show the character's sickness, but it just made it hard to read.

I looked up her other book, and people have said it's similar to this one. I think it's just not for me. It's a shame, too, because Scarlett is funny; I just have such a hard time looking past the weird formatting.

message 46: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam That's just...strange. You can imagine vomit in your head, I'm sure, no need for the running ink. :P I don't think something like that would be quite to my taste either.

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

It's very strange. On the one hand, it's very unique, and I'm sure others might like it, but it's so distracting. I haven't read any of it in a day or so, and I don't like dreading a book. I think I'll put it to the side and pick up something different. Reading should be fun, not headache-inducing :P.

message 48: by Weasley (new) - added it

Weasley This review is amazing, Sam. I want to find out what happened in Chapter 12. :D This is going on my TBR now! :)

message 49: by Cecilia (new) - added it

Cecilia R This is my first time reading a review of this book and you have me convinced, Sam, that I should buy a copy! It seems pretty intense though. I wonder if I'll like it.

message 50: by Sam (last edited Feb 04, 2012 10:54am) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam Weasley, you really don't want to find out what happens at the end of that chapter. :( Buy yay for putting it on your TBR! :D

Cecilia, this book is a love-or-hate kind of story, I can see that almost straight away. I hoping you will love it, too. :)
