Science Fiction

Across the Universe starts out with a girl, Amy, and her parents getting cryogenically frozen to go on a ship to start life on a new planet called Centauri Earth. Amy ends up getting unplugged while she is on the ship, and Elder, a boy her age that is on the ship and learning how to be the next leader, finds her in enough time before she dies. Everything on the ship is weird to her, and the leader Eldest, hates her and makes the other people on the ship think she was an experiment because she looks different from them. Soon other people start getting unplugged, but Amy and Elder don’t find them in enough time. They work together to find out who is doing it, and end up finding that one of the old leaders is still alive. Elder breaks free from Eldest’s hold, and Eldest ends up getting killed by the former leader because he believes Eldest isn’t leading the ship right. He told them the ship was 150 years behind schedule, but at the very end Elder figures out that the ship is going too fast and they could pass up the planet. The book was gripping and suspenseful as the characters learned what was really going on and as Amy adjusted to the futuristic ways. Everything was genetically engineered or altered and the people on the ship spoke differently than Amy did when she was “alive”, and it was interesting to see the differences.
