Alexander McCall Smith is so multi-talentd and so many faced that it would be surprising NOT to find a book or series of his that one did not like for one cannot conceive of oneself as being as multi-faceted as he is. And so, though I admit to adoring The Ladies #1 Detective Agency series and am a seriou fan of Isabel Dalhousie, the series based on sketches from the Edinburgh Statesman do not set me in thrall. In fact they turn me off. Entirely. I find their inhabitants to be narcissistic . . . and I think I'll just stop right there, short of a rant, how about it?
