Between the attention-grabbing (to me, anyway) trailer for the movie and all of the critical praise I have read regarding Jhumpa Lahiri, I think my expectations for this book were too high. I had hoped to like it much more than I actually did. There was nothing wrong with it; it just didn't affect me in any way. Part of the problem was that I never really felt particularly connected to Gogol. I think I would have preferred a whole novel from Ashima or Ashoke's perspective instead of just the glimpses we got through their eyes. At any rate, the book wasn't a waste of time by any means, but it wasn't the wonderful thing I had anticipated.
