it was amazing

It always irks me when doctors write novels (I'm thinking of "The Kite Runner" here) -- isn't it enough that they have successful careers in the sciences? Do they have to excel at everything?

However, I have to admit that this was a great novel, not so much in the literary sense, but in the "keep-me-up-until-midnight" sense. The passages describing Ethiopia were evocative and the authority with which the author described medical scenes (the bulk of the story took place within a hospital) was appreciated. I am planning on reading the author's earlier book "My Own Country," next.
