Read from January 28 to February 06, 2012

This tale of an Ethiopian son of an English surgeon making his way through his childhood and into a career is intriguing. Verghese is an excellent writer, and his characters are very well-defined and memorable. However, the plot verges on the melodramatic a bit too often, and relies on coincidences too much as well. These seem a bit unexpected in such an otherwise well-written novel.
