This book wasn't as good as I remember it. Then again, I was much younger when I originally read the series. That being said, this book just really sets the stage for the rest of the series which gets more into the fantasy/sci-fi realm.

Reading this book as an adult I was very aware (unlike when reading something like the Harry Potter series) that I was reading a book meant for children. A lot of the plot points and mysterious characters were fairly obvious and not as suspenseful as intended. It was a very childish adventure in many way. I still hold out high hope for the rest of the series (partially because Jane, Simon, and Barney aren't the main characters in all of the books) and hopefully this rereading doesn't completely destroy my middle school recollections of one of my favorite book series.
