Vanished Kingdoms: The History of Half-Forgotten Europe

Very, very detailed analysis of kingdoms that have dissolved over the centuries. Excellent analysis of the most-recent Soviet Union. I'm always surprised at the ingenious ways the old cultures to kill one another. One ancient tribe would bend down two adjacent birch trees then tie a leg of the soon-to-be-deceased to the tip of each tree. Then, release!

The first few chapters deal with kingdoms from around 4th and 5th century of which I have little knowledge, so I was a bit lost in the slurry of names and regions. But now I'm up to the chapter on Aragon (12th century) and am feeling a little less ignorant. Just a little." |
