For those who are interested in an historical survey of France, Ina Caro's Paris to the Past will not satisfy your craving for knowledge and understanding; however, it's not designed for that purpose. For people planning to travel to Paris and it surrounding area, Caro's book offers more than just a collection of day trips from Paris. It takes the reader on a rich journey to those sites, provides, in most instances, wonderful historical background and consequent understanding of why the cathedral, castle, chateau or town described matters in that moment of or the broader sweep of French history, and, in turn, informs the reader's decision-making in planning his or her travels. For a lover of France and French history like me, whether or not a trip is immediately in the offing, Ms. Caro's is a fine addition to the library.
