This novel inspired some odd dreams, and frankly annoyed me a bit. Yet my love for Laura Lippman continues. This wasn't the best of her works, but it was an interesting read.
The heart of the story, for me, was what really happened to Calliope Jenkins' and her baby, yet when we do get an answer to this question, it is rushed and pushed aside. Seems to me that the moving force of the novel deserved a bit more time and a whole lot more drama than it was given. Certainly more justice than was allowed. Of course, if that were up to me, I'd be the writer, not the reader!
Characters in this book were, at times, a bit confusing, with so many similar names: Teena, Tisha, Calliope, Cassandra. Add in Candy Barr, and I was lost on many pages! The story, as always, drove me to finish.
"Life Sentences" is definitely worth reading. Just be sure you keep your characters straight!
