I loved this book! Why did I never read it as a a child? I remember always seeing it on the library shelves.

Sherwood Smith It had painfully silly cover art, as I recall, which is why I stayed away from it. (I learned since those days it was popular for years and years, but then I could never find a copy.)

CatholicBibliophagist Yeah, Lois Lenski. As a child I never liked her artwork.

It's kind of funny which books I always saw on the shelves but never dreamed of reading. Foremost among them was The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe which had a title that I considered too silly for words, so I never picked it up. Same with The Horse and his Boy. I didn't read those until college when I was coerced into it by my Mythie friends.

Sherwood Smith I was going to guess Lois Lenski! I always avoided books she illustrated, they always seemed distorted. Yeah, I avoided Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe too, but it was a friend in junior high who convinced me to give them a try.
