This book is a historical fiction set in Italy (Rome, then Venice) in the 1500s. The narrator is a dwarf who works for a courtesan (high-priced hooker). Essentially, this story focuses on a period in their lives and what it was like in Europe, especially Italy, during this time. Tradition, art, history, religion, power, corruption, and all the things that make good historical fiction are here.

I like the author's writing style, so I will probably read some other books she has written.

I would have liked this book more if I hadn't seen the movie Dangerous Beauty, which is.....well, a book about a Venetian courtesan in the 1500s. There were enough similarities that I felt like I already knew what was going to happen on the next page. Regardless, it was still a good book and did have its own story line worth reading, if historical fiction is your thing.
