A dying man comes into Inspector Ian Rutledge's office and confesses to a murder in 1915, but won't say anything about it except the victim's name. In investigating this, Rutledge has to go to a very unfriendly village to get more information. The man in his head who has 'haunted' him since the Battle of the Somme is not as evident as in previous books, perhaps Rutledge is getting better. Still, the two of them try to figure out the truth of the matter. A very good mystery, with a lot of historical information about the First World War.
