One of the oddest books I've read. Two Canadian children are in fear of their lives, convinced (not without reason) that the psychopathic uncle of one of them is out to kill them both, but unable to convince any adults to take them seriously. So they plot to murder him first.
Every character is an oddball; from the couple at the store who believe Barnaby is their lost son re-born, to the love-sick mountie and even the children themselves. On the one hand, they're not particularly likeable - but then tho whole ensemble have a lop-sided charm right down to the battle-scarred old cougar who lurks in the forest.
By turns whimsical, weird and enchanting but never sentimental; this was a page-turner and I shall look out for other books by this author,
