Tangled by Erica O’Rourke
YA Paranormal Romance- Jan. 31st, 2012

Tangled is the second in the YA paranormal series about witches called ARCs.

In the last book Torn, Mo Fitzgerald discovered that her best friend, Verity was an ARC. However, she was unable to save Verity from her evil aunt. Depressed and feared, Mo is now an outcast at her high school. Verity’s younger sister, Constance hates her but is now coming into her ARC powers and is distrustful of Mo and does not believe she is gaining magical powers. But without guidance, Constance will probably die. So Mo enlists the aid of Luc, the ARC foretold to mate with her. While Mo is attracted to Luc, she questions his real intentions and since she is actually a Flat- person without any magical powers, she is disdained by the ARC community. In addition, her uncle’s ties to a mob boss make Mo’s life uncertain as she is threatened by shifting powers in the area. Worse, she is troubled by her soon to be released father who is a felon and left her family to fend for themselves. Not only that, her mob bodyguard, Colin is hiding things...But even with her life in turmoil she knows that Constance uncontrolled powers will harm her. To save Constance, Mo signs a finding contract with the ARCs since she has mysterious abilities with the unstable raw power which they use. But if she fails to stabilize it, is her death.

This is a very complex story, it can be read having not read the first book but I think it will take a while to orient the reader and the death of Verity plays a large part in this story. Mo is a very likeable and down to earth character. In contrast, Constance is a very annoying and irritating character that I really wished had not been in the book even though it drove much of the story. The book is and bridging book in the series as Mo's mysterious father returns and the mob is a heavy presence around her family which on creates more danger. The love triangle between Lucas, Colin and Mo causes a lot of tension as Mo is uncertain about either. Colin refuses to tell her about his shady past and Luc says he cares for her but his loyalties to the ARCs seem very strong. There are many twists and turns, betrayals and hidden agendas especially concerning the mob.

Those who enjoy a thrilling storyline filled with surprises and the paranormal will enjoy this series but I strongly suggest reading the first book beforehand.
