The people of Earth have escaped to a distant planet. Three social classes exist there. Trueborns are from human mothers, own land, and are the highest class citizens. Lowborns are humans without land who earned their passage to the new planet as slaves to the trueborns. GENs are genetically engineered nonhumans who are grown in a tank. They are the lowest of classes. Their DNA is part human part animal selected to give them a specific skill set that will be valuable later in their lifes. They are raised by other GENs whose skill set (sket) is nuturing.

Kayla is a GEN who has just turned 15. She is sent away from her nuture mother and home to a work assignment. Kayla and her strength set are assigned to aid an enderly trueborn named Zul. Right from the beginning Zul and his great grandson, Devak, are not the typical trueborns. Their actions and treatment of Kayla call in to question everything she has believed in her entire existence.

Mishalla is Kayla's tank sister and has been assigned to work in a crisis creche or nursery. It doesn't seem quite right though as babies are being dropped off and picked up in the middle of the night with no explanation. Mishalla's concern for her charges leads her on a journey that is both unexpected and very dangerous for a GEN.

With no way of stopping the frightening events unfolding around them, Kayla and Mishalla must decide if they are willing to risk everything to help others survive.

This is an amazing science fiction book. There are so many rules that must be established in order to understand the plot, but Sandler has articulately woven them in without creating drag at the beginning. The characters are compelling, heartfelt, and multidimensional. Lovers of sci-fi and YA will enjoy this one immensely!

This book has enough action to appeal to boys and a relationship story line plus a female protagonist to appeal to girls.
