Can You Keep a Secret?
by Sophie Kinsella
by Sophie Kinsella
Ever had to the urge to spill out all your secrets? To follow the powerful lyrics of the band Onerepublic and simply "give all your secrets away"? Well in the book "Can You Keep a Secret" by popular author Sophie kinsella, the main character, Emma Corrigan does just that. The book actually takes it one step further, for Emma does not spills all her dirt onto a friend or someone she actually trusts, but to a stranger.
It is a theory that has been heard before, after all if a stranger, whom like in the story your likely to never see again, learns something about you and decides to share their knowledge with others later, it would not really affect you would it? And by following that train of thought anyone can see just how perfect Kinsella's book is, it speaks to a thought that has passed everyone's mind. Better yet however, it shows the reader that letting secrets out not only lets others in, it can even teach you things you did not know about yourself.
In fact Sophie Kinsella's whole conception of "revealing secrets" was not just present in her book but in her real life as well. Sophie had until then all her work under her real name, Madeleine Wickham but hat all changed when she published "Can You Keep a Secret". By submitting her story anonymously and getting it published right off the bat, the editors were shocked to find out that their new book was actually by Madeleine, someone they had previously worked with. And as if that was not enough, Sophie had wrote as if she had caught a glimpse into the future.
In her brilliant book the main character Emma, whom the reader quickly catches on to be someone with quite a few secrets, is returning from a disastrous work trip when her airplane goes through a strong patch of turbulence. Emma, who had always been a little afraid of flying is now terrified, convinced she is going to die. Throw in uncomfortable clothes, relationship doubts, a family that never seems to be satisfied and a stranger that seems friendly; she had the recipe for major "word vomit".
Sooner than she even realizes it, Emma is spilling everything to the American guy sitting next to her, and I mean everything; Her relationship doubts, weird dreams and even her real size in clothes. During the whole flight this continues, the American barely gets a say in the matter but when she finally stops the flight is over, and a huge weight lifted from her back. In the airport she meets up with her boyfriend Connor and decides to forget about what happened. "Probably for the best," she convinces herself, after all the American is never going to bump into her again. But as luck would have it (at least for us readers) they do re-meet, American Jack is actually Jack Harper the important CEO of Panther Cola and that makes him her boss.
This all leads Emma into a web she no intentions of being in, she would rather her boss not even know she existed rather than know all the intimate details of her life. The days that Jack spends inside Emma's office and in her head was enough to have her admitting secrets even she had kept from herself. Feelings for Connor began being questioned, Jack developed another role in her life, the relationship with her roommate become more honest and all the resentment between family was brought into play. Although Emma does not fully admit it until much later in the book, from the very beginning the reader clearly see that her telling Jack everything was a good thing, not only did it allow her to build an open relationship with him and fix her other relationships, but it let her be honest with herself.
Personally I found this book extremely delightful. Sophie Kinsella's writing methods allowed for it to be an immediate page turner, a fictional, comedic romantic story interesting enough to keep you on your toes. Taking into consideration most of her previous books, and the small summary in the back it would be easy to come to the conclusion that "Can You Keep a Secret" is nothing but an easy read, a beach read. Maybe their right, I certainly would read this in a beach but then again I would read this book anywhere. Although it does not come from an author recognized for sophisticated literary novel, to me its message is just as practical as anything written by Shakespeare.
The main characters are easy to identify with, for it is hard to come across someone who never keep a secret, or who never wondered about something in their life. Also the narrator's voice flows so well that it can at times feel like your witnessing the story with your own eyes, or hearing about it, juicy details and all from a good friend. "Can You Keep a Secret" has context behind it and it is not hidden from the reader, but also it gives them a chance to enjoy themselves as they travel to a setting in which they will find themselves laughing, cheering on romances, and maybe even like Emma, make a few discoveries of their own.
I could recommend this book any day of the week and with Valentines day right around the corner I would encourage anyone take the opportunity to read "Can You Keep a Secret" by Sophie Kinsella. Romance is well alive in it so it allows you to stay true to the feeling of love that comes with the month of February. Plus Valentines day is also about indulging in good little treats so what better than a good book to go along with your heart shaped chocolates?
