** spoiler alert ** If you want a standard history of the French Revolution, skip this book. You will find it too much like a novel (or a drama), written as if the writer were witnessing each event as it takes place, but with all-knowing insight into not only the historical context, but the inner thoughts of the actors.

Of course, this is exactly what makes Carlyle's work on the Revolution uniquely appealing to some, such as myself (as it turned out). I had no idea that the book was written like this, and I actually started reading it expecting a "standard history".
