Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies
by Jared Diamond
by Jared Diamond
I found this book to be very compelling and insightful. And, in his speculation about the way history could have evolved if the large mammals in Africa had been trainable, Diamond conjures up the image of the Roman Empire invaded by "rhino-mounted Bantu shock troops." That phrase alone made the book worth it. "Friends, romans, countrymen, lend me your ears. I come not to--HOLY SHIT ARE THOSE RHINO-MOUNTED BANTU SHOCK TROOPS"
